It was in the Cards
The first time Norm asked Trish on a date, he placed a card on her desk in the laboratory where she worked. Inside the card Norm wrote a personal note: “Trish, your beautiful smile lights up a room when you enter it…I hope you consider going out with me”. That was the beginning of a whirl-wind romance. Every “month-a-versary” during their courtship they gave each other cards until their engagement 6 months later.

One night Norm asked Trish’s mom to place a wrapped gift on Trish’s bed. When Trish got home she opened the gift… a box of Nutchos chocolate. She knew it was a symbol of a very special evening. Many
years prior to this night, Trish had told her best friend that the man who gave her a box of Nutchos chocolate would be the one she would marry. Norm took Trish to La Vielle Gare restaurant in St. Boniface for a romantic dinner followed by a stroll at St. Boniface Cathedral ruins. Norm gave yet another card to Trish which said:

“We will make a happy couple, Surely you must agree, Our love will last forever, Trish will you marry me? ”

The first letter of each line spelled out a hint of a special evening to celebrate their engagement. It was a Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra concert featuring Michael Burgess of “Les Miserables” fame.

Drs. Norman and Tricia Barnabé got married 20 months later on July 7, 2001.

Our first dance as a married couple was to the song “At Last…” by Etta James. No other song could be so fitting or true. But this story has a prelude and it all began in high school. read more»

We had the ceremony under a floral archway decorated by my mother and cousins in front of our fishpond and two apples trees. I made my own bouquets and floral centrepieces with the help of my only bridesmaid, mother and sister-law. read more»
